sliced marbled black sesame banana bread

This marbled black sesame banana bread is so delicious, nutty, and comforting. It’s a combination of my favorite Asian dessert flavor with my favorite banana bread. Black sesame in banana bread form is amazing!

Black sesame is used in a lot of Asian desserts and it’s my absolute favorite flavor to get when I go to Taiwan or China. I especially love it in breads and this black sesame banana bread is what dreams are made of (in my world at least). I love the deep nutty flavor of the black sesame seeds in the perfectly sweet banana bread.

It’s super easy, nutty, moist, perfectly sweet, and healthier than your average banana bread. Did you know those tiny little black sesame seeds are actually really good for you?! They help with inflammation, anti-aging, digestive health, lowering cholesterol, hair growth, bone health, and regulating estrogen and progesterone levels. They are also high in zinc, beneficial antioxidants, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, healthy fats, and fiber. Those little seeds are such powerhouses!

Total Time:1 hour 10 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt
  • 1/2 cup black sesame seed powder
  • 3 large very ripe bananas, mashed (about 2 cups mashed)
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil, melted (avocado or olive oil works too)
  • 1/2 cup coconut sugar (pure organic cane sugar or brown sugar works too)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup + 2 Tbsp unsweetened almond milk, divided (or any non-dairy milk)
  • 2-3 Tbsp black and white sesame seeds to sprinkle on top (optional)

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line an 8x4 inch loaf pan with parchment paper or spray pan.
  • In a medium bowl, combine flour, cinnamon, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Whisk until well combined.
  • In a large bowl, mash bananas well. Add the melted coconut oil, sugar, vanilla, apple cider vinegar, and 1/4 cup of almond milk. Whisk until well combined.
  • Add dry ingredients to wet. Use a spatula and stir until combined. Careful not to over mix.
  • Pour half of the batter into the other bowl. In one of the bowls, add the black sesame powder and 2 Tbsp of almond milk. Use a spatula and mix until combined.
  • Alternate scooping a dollop of the regular batter alternately with the black sesame batter into the loaf pan. Using a knife, swirl batter a few times. Sprinkle the black and white sesame seeds on top. Bake for 50-60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean. The top will be a golden brown.
  • Let it cool in the pan for 15 minutes then remove and place on a cooling rack to cool completely. Slice and enjoy! Store in an airtight container on the counter for 3 days.
